Ben Barnes: "I cannot be next Robert Pattinson, I was before him”
* Ben Barnes backs off the person of prince Caspian to lead 'The portrait of Dorian Gray', which makes début this Friday.
* Barnes shares leading role with Colin Firth, with whom he has already worked in 'Easy Virtue'.
As the person which he represents, the age does not do leave mark on him. Ben Barnes is almost 30 years old, but he preserves an adolescent face he tries to pretend with a stubble. Prince Caspian turns now into Dorian Gray, a young beautiful man consumed by the temptations. After a small role in 'Stardust' and his protagonist role in the drama 'Bigga Than Ben', he jumped to the reputation in the 'Chronicles of Narnia' but he is provided with more mature movies as 'Locked In' and 'Killing Bono', which will release this year.
Dorian is the dream of many actors: how has you lived through him?
At first it gave me panic because each one has an idea formed on this person and you cannot satisfy the whole world. In the end you understand that you have to find your own way and do a proper reading. I was very excited to play such a well-known and such complex person, who happens to be an innocent boy and turns into a cynic and killer monster.
“Many people are becoming famous without any type of talent”
In the movie 'Easy Virtue' Colin Firth was personifying your father, now he is an art of Mefistófeles that perverts you.
Yes, it has been fantastic to do another movie with him. Only already looking at him is learning. Although, I never asked him for advice and he wanted to advise nobody, I believe that we much understood each other. Only in spite of looking we knew if a scene was satisfying for us or not. It is very hard if you are not satisfied with a capture, and this is something that we have in common. He is a very serious, enclosed man in a comedy or in a very dramatic role he does not lose this cynicism touch, that seems admirable to me.
What does a new Robert Pattinson think about being considered to be him?
Very well, in fact I took more time in this that he, I cannot be next Robert Pattinson because I was earlier. But I have never felt comfortable with this idea, and I am sure that Robert neither. It is graceful, in the institute I was singing with his older sister. He grew up very close to where I was living, it is really curious what it has spent to him.
Can the world of the movies go so far like a pervert in the history?
Yes, I believe that one of the lessons of the history, in his modern conception, is not to allow you to catch for the easy reputation. To turn you into a celebrity can give you the sensation of being able, but it is not a lasting power because you have not done anything to deserve it. Many people are becoming famous without any type of talent, in reality show and programs like that, I believe that those people lose their respect. You cannot abuse this type of infamy.
When would you be capable of selling your soul?
If I have learned something with this movie, it is the fact that I should not sell my soul for anything. I believe that this history has a big moral, and it is the great thing that we must take care of our human extract.
What does you see when you look in the mirror?
My reflex.
“I wonder why the people pay so much attention to a pale British and skinny boy as me.”
What we see is real Bern Barnes or a studied image?
It depends on the day, on what I have been doing. There are days that I have to look like an insurance of myself, like when I have to be in a press conference or a premiere, or signing autographs. Then I look at the mirror and wonder why the people pay so much attention to a pale British and skinny boy like me. It seems slightly ridiculous to me. But I believe that the whole world has days in which it feels more safe of itself.
Is there something of Dorian Gray in you?
Not very much. I have always been the youngest of my class, feign much less age of the one that I have, and that has been useful for me at the time of interpreting this person. But I preferred to try to give him a darker and diabolical character, and that entertained me much more, because to interpret a young innocent person was slightly natural for me. In the end I surprised to realize that when Dorian Gray loses his soul, it is when we really see more soul in him. This is an interesting thing.
In this movie you tackles even homosexual bed scenes. Is it new for you?
The people meet me before 'Narnia' but I have done many other less well-known movies. But yes, it has been a much more mature moment and I hope to be able to keep on experimenting with diverse persons.
What can you say to us about the following delivery of 'Narnia, The Voyage Of The Dawn Treader'?
We already have finished the shooting, in fact the movie will make début in December, and it is my favorite story of seven Narnia chronicles. It is an adventures story of the old custom, like the Sinbad the sailor, there is magic, struggles, dragons, and marine snakes … As for my person, now I am a king and it is nice to interpret this type of changes. I have a much more inhabited beard.

no problem, dzisiaj mam dobry dzień, bo własnie zrobiłam kolejne tłumaczenie
Ben Barnes: "If I was eternally a young man, I would get bored quickly"
We all meet him as Prince Caspian in the second delivery of 'The chronicles of Narnia', of which saga he prepares the third part for 2011. In spite of his reputation and his youth, Ben Barnes proves to be a native, a joker and having his both feet on the ground. Nothing to see in the person which he incarnates in his last movie, 'The portrait of Dorian Gray', where he gets into the skin of this immortal vivid work of Oscar Wilde which has generated so many adaptations.
HoyCinema: You support certain similarities with the person of Dorian Gray: the youth, the reputation …
Ben Barnes: I am a killer … (laughs).
HoyCinema: Are you afraid to end like he did?
Ben Barnes: I wait that yes (laughs). One of the interesting things of this history is that there is this moral, which says that you should not enter this game to end like Dorian Gray, and of making use of the opportunities which the reputation puts in your way, to be more respectful at the time of accepting it. But the bacchanals certainly are equal, eh! (laughs).
HoyCinema: What would you do if you were staying eternally young?
Ben Barnes: Since I believe that I would get bored quickly. It is one of the lessons that the movie teaches us. I believe that the first thing of everything, I would go to visit every country of the world, before beginning to be bored. Although, for the junkets like press I am traveling enough, but there are some countries that I have not visited yet.
HoyCinema: You had already worked with Colin Firth some years ago in 'Easy Virtue': how has it been to make the movie with him again?
Ben Barnes: Very well, in that movie he was my father and we were only coinciding in a pair of scenes. Those were the easiest scenes of the whole movie for me, and it was fantastic to have the opportunity to have a more finished relation with him on the screen, because he had already turned into my friend and in certain form into my mentor in the real life, and it is interesting to investigate this so intense relation in this movie. It is never known, although Dorian is the killer, who the villain is in fact, and it is very interesting, because Henry (Colin Firth) is the one that handles all the threads of the story.
HoyCinema: You are going to give life to the journalist Neil McCormick in the movie about U2 'Killing Bono': what can you tell us about this movie?
Ben Barnes: It is based on a semi autobiographical story which was called 'I was Bono’s Doppelganger' ('Killing Bono: I was Bono's Doppelganger'), and it is painting the portrait of the decade since they finished the school, 17-18, and you see how U2 are rising to the reputation and turn into heroes, and then you see these two brothers and their absolute defeat before their attempt of turning into rock stars, without achieving it for anything. Partly it is based on the reality and partly it is exaggerated. But the basic premise is that the younger brother of Ivan, Neil, does an audition for U2 when it is in the school and Bono says to Ivan: "We want your brother in our group" and Ivan says: "No, he is going to be in my group" and in this moment he does not even have a musical group, so not only he ruined his own life, but that of his brother, who he convinces to get into his group. Ten years later, the brother finds out that he might have entered U2.
HoyCinema: Do you like music? To what kind of music do you listen?
Ben Barnes: I love to listen to all kinds of music. I have always had a relation with music, when I was in school I was touching the battery in jazz bands, and when I ended, I was singing Motown songs. In 'Killing Bono' I have the opportunity to sing 12 rock songs and funky neo romantic, it is fantastic.
HoyCinema: Also you have been engaged in premiere 'Locked In' and the new delivery of 'The chronicles of Narnia'.
Ben Barnes: ' Locked In' is a very small movie that I did in Boston last year. It is a psychological drama, I wanted to do a very different person from what I was doing earlier, had a few very interesting drafts, and when I stopped reading the script I felt like it was very much reflecting on my own life. It is a very interesting script.
And with 'The Voyage Of The Dawn Treader' I have been six months in Australia, it is the best story of the Chronicles of Narnia. Now I am the king, so it is fantastic. It is one of these big histories, with many adventures, and I very want to see it.
HoyCinema: Apart from these qualifications: do you have other projects ahead?
Ben Barnes: I have a pair of things, but I do not know which I will take, and in the next weeks I hope to be able to take a decision about one or another project.

Quote:
No More Mr. Prince Charming
Ben Barnes on Dorian Gray
Ben Barnes landed his first big role as the radiant Prince Caspian in the fantasy saga The Chronicles of Narnia. In the Oscar Wilde adaption of The picture of Dorian Gray, he shows us his extremely attractive dark side. In his talk with Skip the young Londoner talks about how he deals with female fans and what his film partner Colin Firth does in the men’s loo.
SKIP: Ben, if one googles your name, the word ‘girlfrriend’ immediately appears next to it. Does it bother you how much people are interested in your love life?
Ben Barnes: Well, no that’s ok. Just as long as they are interested in me at all. And luckily, my face is not sooo well-known and I can move around quite anonymously. Only at premieres and on airports do people recognise me. But I can still take the tube home or walk around London without people
recognising me, that’s wonderful. People tend to recognise soap actors rather than those from the cinema, because they see them every week. I have only been in eight movies, of which most people have seen two at the most, so they have only spent about four hours with me (laughs).
SKIP: Dorian Gray is one of the best known novel characters of all times. How do you approach such a role?
Ben Barnes: It’s best to start at the origin and not get distracted by the legend around him. We wanted to enter his head, to see how he functions. He has no soul – all his experiences leave traces on his portrait, not on him. Nothing can harm him which makes him cynical and bored and a little insane and empty.
SKIP: Do bad deeds usually leave marks on people?
Ben Barnes: In times of the new forms of media, definitely, not always on the actual person, but on his or her image. Especially if one is in the public eye. Especially if one misbehaves, one is publicly crucified. In general, I think this is why a guilty conscience is one of man’s emotions. It forces us to pull ourselves together. Someone who does whatever he or she wants is a psychopath. Or Keith Richards. He fell off a palm tree once and nothing happened. What a lucky guy!
SKIP: Dorian Gray is after the romantic comedy Easy Virtue your second film with British superstar Colin Firth. How do you get along?
Ben Barnes: Most people think Colin is dry and reserved – he must have gotten this image from his films. But he is a sneaky little bastard. Once I fell asleep on set and he put a tape over my mouth and tied my sleeves together. And then he was pointing his finger at me and laughed like a little child. I also visited him on the set of A Single Man. He was just shooting a scene in the men’s room, standing in front of a urinal and sighing with relief. At that moment I felt my phone vibrating – he actually sent me a text message saying: “I’m pissing right now!” And for this the guy gets an Oscar nomination!
SKIP: Dorian doesn’t age, his portrait ages for him. What is your ideal picture of aging?
Ben Barnes: I don’t want to change much on the inside. As an actor, of course one keeps a little piece of each role if one has invested so much time and love into the characters one portrays, so that has to have an influence. I just want to be happy, after all, that’s what we all strive for. Regarding my career… I don’t want to become a superstar. I just want to make a few films that someone, somewhere in the world, considers his or her favourite films.
SKIP: Isn’t Dorian Gray’s story a wonderful metaphor for the beauty and youth mania?
Ben Barnes: Yes, absolutely. Everyone tries frantically to make the marks of life invisible. But, let’s be honest, Botox and plastic surgery never really work. One can always tell. It is fake. It’s the same thing with the so-called celebrities. If one is famous because one is a great actor, musician, poet, painter or politician, one has power. But to have celebrity status just because of one’s self, the Big-Brother-syndrome or this It-Girl-thing, that is very dangerous. It can be over so quickly and leaves you very empty. And of course one can try to always look young, but that’s not real, that’s not really you, and it’s not particularly classy. In the acting business, this is a curse. You gets parts, because you look the way you look. A director recently said to me: “You can’t play a 28-year-old guy!” – “Yes, but …I am 28, of course I can play one!” – “But you don’t look like it!” (laughs) One has to try to put one’s stamp on things, like Johnny Depp for example, and to do what is fun. I’m in the process of learning this right now. Colin said to me: “When you’re grown-up, you’ll get the really interesting parts!” (laughs).
SKIP: So where will we see you next?
Ben Barnes: I just recently finished filming the Irish comedy Killing Bono, a book adaption. Funnily enough, it was Bono himself who suggested this film title. “The only way to get famous is to kill me,” he said. It is about two brothers, Ivan and Neil McCormick. They tell their class mates that they will become the greatest rock stars of the world. That doesn’t work out – but said class mates later become U2 (laughs). It’s unbelievable funny, a real rock’n’roll film. People who are U2 fans will love this film. And so will people who hate U2.

super wywiad, czytałam własnie w oryginale po niemiecku
kocham go za te zdania:
"I don’t want to become a superstar. I just want to make a few films that someone, somewhere in the world, considers his or her favourite films."
"One has to try to put one’s stamp on things, like Johnny Depp for example, and to do what is fun. I’m in the process of learning this right now."
a Colin to już w ogóle złapał mnie za serce, powinni jakąś komedię nakręcić o życiu Bena i Colina (mogliby ich tak razem zamknąc na tydzień w domu, ciekawe czy by przeżyli i jak by się to skonczyło )
